Why one week away won’t undo your progress (and might even help it)

There’s a quiet fear that often creeps in before a holiday…

What if I undo all my progress?”

It’s something I hear a lot – and if I’m honest, it used to cross my mind too.

But here’s the truth:

A week away doesn’t undo months (or years) of consistent movement, strength building, and self-care.

In fact, it can do the opposite.

Consistency is built over time — not in a single week

Your body isn’t that fragile.

Strength, mobility, and resilience are the result of repeated effort over time.

One week of doing things differently – eating more freely, moving in new ways, or even resting more – doesn’t erase that.

Think of your progress like a long-term investment, not a daily scorecard.

A different kind of movement still counts

On our recent family holiday to France, we didn’t follow a structured routine – and that was the whole point.

We walked more.

We explored.

We swam.

We moved in ways that felt natural and enjoyable rather than planned and purposeful.

And that kind of movement still supports your body – just in a different way.

Sometimes, stepping away from routine is exactly what your body needs.

Food is part of the experience — not something to control

Good food, shared meals, trying local dishes… that’s part of the richness of a holiday.

We ate what we wanted, when we wanted.

No guilt. No making up for it. No rules.

Because one week of enjoying food differently doesn’t define your health – your overall habits do.

And when your everyday life is grounded in balance, there’s nothing to compensate for.

Rest isn’t a setback — it’s part of progress

Let’s not forget something important: recovery matters.

Time away from structured exercise can:

  • Reduce physical fatigue
  • Support nervous system regulation
  • Improve motivation when you return

Many people come back from a break feeling stronger, more energised, and more focused.

That’s not losing progress – that’s supporting it.

Life isn’t meant to be lived in restriction

If your routine only works when everything is perfectly controlled, it’s not really sustainable.

Real life includes:

  • Holidays
  • Celebrations
  • Spontaneity
  • Rest

And your approach to movement and health should be able to flex with that – not fight against it.

The bigger picture

Progress isn’t about what happens in one week.

It’s about what you do most of the time.

So if you’ve built consistent habits, look after your body regularly, and approach your health with a balanced mindset… a holiday isn’t something to worry about.

It’s something to fully enjoy.

And when you come back, you simply pick up where you left off.

No guilt. No punishment. No starting over.

Just continuing the journey.
